Disney's new 'working' lightsaber prop looks beautiful damn real

Disney has unveiled a reproduction lightsaber that automatically extends and lights up from its heart and soul. To answer the question likely to be asked first: You can't buy it right forthwith. It isn't clear whether or not the prop will ever be for sales event. But you can see what it looks care in the video above, which is more or less the like a working lightsaber, OR as close-set to one as I've ever seen.

Maybe the video has been worked connected to make the airplane propeller look extra practiced, but even so, it automatically extends and lights up brightly: cardinal of the main things lightsabers do, along with cut hands and deflecting blaster fire. As Polygon (which spotted the mystifier yesterday) points out, Principal Wars fans have sol ALIR had to settle for retractable lightsabers that are lit from the bottom, or in full-lit sabers that look more like they do in the movies but Don't retract. This current model appears to rich person information technology all.

About the lightsaber, Disney says, "Yes, that's a refreshing type of lightsaber Rey is holding in her hand, created by Walt Disney Imagineering Inquiry and Ontogeny," but that's astir it. The prop will constitute used by actors at the Wizard Wars: Galactic Starcruiser experience at Disney World in Florida, a two-night fake starship stay possibility in 2022. ("This International Relations and Security Network't storytelling—it'sstoryliving.")

How the lightsaber works International Relations and Security Network't known unlikely of Disney, but a 2018 patent provides the most likely explanation. The Disney patent describes a posture lightsaber that operates by the same principle that allows a measuring record to become unbending after unrolling.

The Verge explained the patent's applied science last month, and the gif below from Disney and Star Wars rooter Ben Ridout illustrates the idea well. (The model won't literally manipulation two measuring tapes, of course. The head is good that moldable strips can both be rolled upwards and get rigid by forming half-circles.)

If the prop rattling looks as good as Disney's video indicates, people are going to wishing it, then I suspect there'll be a way to bribe one—although maybe Walt Disney will keep its proprietary lightsaber tech to itself for few years to hype skyward the Florida experience.

The opposite question that remains is how stout the things will exist. If entirely it does is apprehend the lightsaber expect, that'd be really cool for fans and cosplayers, but information technology'd be far better if you could in reality swing it around without the blade flopping over. Mayhap it isn't promising that the histrion in the teaser video stands completely still while holding the lightsaber, simply it whitethorn non mean anything.
